Being a student still, 100$ is the max you should go. If i were in college i would charge about 50$. I am 16 years old but with 3 years of experience and yet charge only 15$, most designs take me about 1 and a half to two hours, so basically it's good for my age and as a matter of fact it attracts customers.

Here's some of my work : http://mstdesignstudios.deviantart.com/gallery/

Good for 15$/logo don't you think? XD
References :
I would take your teacher's advice and charge them $200. Your teacher should know what's fair to charge as a student. A professional in the field would charge much more. Plus, this is going to be something they use on everything as a company. I would tell them what a professional would charge them just so they know how much they're saving by going through you.

A good book to use as a guide is the Graphic Artists Handbook. I use it as an artist also. Here's the link below. Good luck to you!

What kind of budget does your client have? It's really hard to get some clients to pay an accurate price for a logo. Many think that $50 is enough. If you are a student, the lowest I'd go is $100, depending on complexity of the logo. Overall, $200 sounds like a nice rounded price, but depending on the client, they may not be into paying that much.
I usually charge by the packet price, because most people can't handle artist's hourly rates.
References :
if i were you, i'd charge by the hour... before you do this though, make sure you come up with plan on how much time you plan on spending doing the work... stick to the schedule as closely as possible, but make sure you plan on taking longer than you think... for example, i find that when i budget 2 hours for typesetting, i'll end up taking 2.5 or 3 hours... 2 years of design training?.. charge $14 an hour for now and tell them it'll take 15 hours... if they agree to that time-frame, do not spend more than 17 hours working for them... it's all about budgeting your time...
