What are the best graphic design softwares?

I am very interested in graphic design. I understand the mixture of colors, images, and prints. I have started to take some basic graphic design courses, what are the best design programs out there?

Adobe CS3 Master Collection probably.

There is also 3d Studio Max and Maya for modeling.

How should I display my graphic design for my college art show?

Should I mount it on foam board? Should I frame it? I’m a senior in college and sadly this is the first opportunity I’ve had to exhibit my graphic design work. I have a gallery opening coming up in April that is exhibiting my work. I am not sure if it is proper for graphic design to be framed or mounted. I am hoping the answer is mounted because I am a poor college student and frames are expensive!! Most of my work is posters, logos, lots of grungy stuff. Any answers are most appreciated! THANKS!

Typically you would mount it on black book board with a 1.25 inch border for anything 8.5 x 11 or smaller and a 2 inch border for anything bigger like posters. Book board is expensive…ish, so your next best bet is black foam core. Just make sure to use a ruler and a VERY sharp razor so you get nice professional straight cuts.

I am interested in desiging layout for a magazine. Is that graphic design or desktop publishing?

Can you give me a brief description of what graphic design is vs. what desktop publishing is?

The best way to answer your quest is that desktop publishing is a small aspect of the graphic design industry.

Desktop publishing is essentially dealing with the content aspect of the publishing industry. It is dealing with layouts, placement, content, imagery, and just about everything else that is required of putting together a published piece with the except of the written content and the actual printing aspect of it. It is the heart and soul of the publishing business.

To correct what the previous answerer stated, the current world of graphic design goes far beyond just logos. These days graphic designers are not only expected to design logos and stationery, but also know a significant amount of desktop publishing, typography, printing, and to a lesser extent photography, advertising, and web design. We are expected to know a little bit of everything when it comes to designing projects.

To answer your question, yes, what you are interested in is desktop publishing. However, there are very few jobs these days that are purely desktop publishing with the except of the newspaper industry. Anything that involves designing layouts these days are turned over to graphic designers, so if that’s what you’re interested it in then that should be what you should be pursuing.

What is the difference between Graphic Design and Communications?

I’ve been checking out a Graphic Design undergraduate degree with a concentration of Advertising, and I was wondering, what’s the difference between Graphic Design and Communications?

Usually, a graphic design degree is going to focus more on art and visual design, whereas with a communications degree you may just touch on visual design. I have a BA in art with concentrations in advertising and computer art, but minored in communications. I started out majoring in communications because I was interested in reporting and newspaper and publication layout. During school I took a job working in advertising and ended up deciding that I was really enjoying focusing on design. I ended up switching majors because I needed more focus on visual design. The communications program offered only a few classes on publication layout and one on basic graphic design, whereas the art program offered three or four levels of classes focusing on advertising design, illustration, photography, logo design, typography, printing, etc.

If you want to be a graphic designer, the design or art program is probably going to be more helpful. If you want to be more involved in public relations, account management, writing, or general publication layout with only light-duty graphics work, communications might be where you want to be.

Any graphic design book recommendations for a beginner?

I just got accepted into a graphic design program and I’ll be starting in January ‘08. In the meantime, I’d like to read up on graphic design to get a bit of a head start and prepare myself for the upcoming schoolyear. I’ve never really taken any graphic design courses, nor have I read any books on the subject… So I’m a complete beginner! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This video shows the creative process from illustrating the human form to which will be used in a mixed media design that encourages high school students to consider taking art even though they might not have artistic ability. The message on the completed design poster says, “Inspiration doesn’t just come to you; you have to create inspiration.” So even though some very talented artists might make drawing and painting look easy, the Graphic Design industry is very different and really doesn’t have much to do with art at all. The brainstorming and thought process involved with making successful Graphic Design solutions as well as other fundamentals of design like Color Theory, Gestalt and Typography are all significant factors that go far beyond the mere ability to draw.

Further education about the Graphic Design industry is important for new students who have yet to discover what Graphic Design is and perhaps they might enjoy such a career if they are made aware of what is involved.

What other graphic design tools does my boyfriend need?

My boyfriend is going to college for graphic design. I gave him a graphic design tablet for his birthday and he already has photoshop. I don’t know a lot about graphic design. Are there any other graphic design tools will help him in college and also use in his future job?

If he already has all the basic adobe suite programs for graphic design like, photoshop, illustrator, indesign, flash, and dreamweaver. he will not need any more programs for now. plus they are very expensive!
