If you need to make professional quality business cards, you'll need to design it appropriately. You'll need to work in a professional application, such as, photoshop, and set up your business card accordingly. The printer I use has guidelines on how to set it up. Good Luck!

If you have Microsoft Publisher (part of some versions of Microsoft Office), it has a template for making business cards. Once you make the master, it will automatically print a page of them. This will work with any number of ready made break apart business card stock or you can simply buy light card stock and cut them out yourself. Since Open Office is virtually a replacement for Microsoft Office, I would suggest grabbing Open Office if you need a free program.

I have also used Corel Draw as well as a number of CAD programs to make business cards. If you go this route and you don't have a template, business cards are 2 x 3.5 inches and allow at least a 1/16th - 1/8th inch margin around the border of the card.

The key to using any program for business cards is the ability to print a dozen duplicates to a singe page. Some programs will do this for you and others will require you to manually duplicate them and create a master page to be printed. If you have to create a master page of duplicates, some programs may have trouble with rendering that many copies of an image and you may have to limit your artwork.

With modern color laser printers and a bit of work, you can create some really nice looking business cards. However, don't get excessive. I've seen some "artists" cards that were so over the top that they really weren't much of an advertising tool and looked rather trashy.

If you intend on having a printer do the work, I suggest limiting yourself to a single color or two. Multiple or full color cards get expensive real fast.
